Son Up Til Son Down bio picture
  • Hi Friends!

Thank you for stopping by my little home on the internet. My name is Marlece. I am a Jesus lovin' country girl. A wife. A momma of 4 boys. A cook. A hairstylist. And well... I wear many other hats depending on the time of day.

You can read a bit more about me and my family on my "About Me" page.

While you're here, I hope you find something that inspires you to whip up a yummy recipe, try a new hairstyle, call up your sisters, or just hug your kids. I hope you will reach out and say "hello" too. I would love to connect with you on Facebook or Twitter.

  • At My Table

This is where my heart my table feeding people. Not only does cooking bring out the artsy in me again for I love to try new things, it also gives me pleasure to have many at my table. The Lord blessed me with a table that has been passed down from many generations and I know that many have sat at it before my time to fellowship together. I want to continue that heritage in my home. The Lord gave me the gifting of hospitality and I have a huge desire to please Him in this area. So enjoy a recipe or two when you go to "At my table"

  • In My Chair

My salon is a place that I can create. I love to see transformation and usually not just in a look, but the way someone might feel. It is a place where I get the privilege of having one on one with someone. I consider it my ministry. I always feel an incredible sense of blessing when someone chooses to sit in my chair and share a little of themselves while I get to use my artistic ability. I like to share some of my work and time spent when you go to "In my chair" at Tame Your Mane Hair Salon.

I’m your biggest cheerleader, thanks for the return

I try to be there for my kids ‘stuff’ and if I’m not they know that their phone is going to blow up with all kinds of questions of ‘what is going on?’ This week has been no different, it has been bundled up with lots of cheers and heavy excitement around here. I’m just so grateful right now to be apart of allllll of this business around here.

Sometimes my cheering is with mixed emotion. For instance, Layton has gotten himself back on the track again. It has been several years, it’s in him, he loves it, and this so makes me happy to hear his excitement but the anxiety that runs thru these veins of mine…..well, let’s just say, Jesus is hearing a lot from me on this subject right now.

layton riding

Brayden, he took his SAT’s last weekend. Again, mixed emotion, excited for what is ahead for him, praying a lot of where the Lord wants to use him in his gifts and talents and then I just want to scream, “NOOOOOOOO, NOT YET!”

He also had another PR this week in his pole vaulting. He also surpassed the school top height, and is headed to districts this week. It was an exciting moment for everyone! It made me a bit teary.

And then this happened today, all these people of mine came to cheer me on for the Capitol City Marathon. I did the half and was so happy with myself, I had a new PR too and have been working towards that for a long time. It felt so good. My cheer squad is always a big incentive when they are chasing me from here to there on the route. I LOVE it!

This guy of mine, got up early to drop me off, then went to get the kids. It really does mean so much. Before every race he takes a lot of attitude from me. I hate the start, I get so anxious I can’t breathe and so the car ride there he can’t say anything or do anything right. “It’s too cold, it’s too hot, don’t leave me right here, go faster, slow down, I look stupid, my foot hurts……….” He handles it all in stride.

The weather was so good. People, may I just say, God answers prayer, I don’t want to run in yucky conditions, it looked like it was going to be rainy and yet it was not at all. Over cast and mild,  perfect!

This guy here, the whole last mile he was in my ear. “Do we have another hill?” I kept saying, “nope smooth sailin’ from here.” Then a few minutes later, ” I think that is a hill,” here I’m sayin’, “Nope, keep marchin’ forward it’s easy from here!” Pretty much the whole mile, this was the case. “You got this, you can do it!” I guess it kept my mind going.

I’m laughing cuz, here he is……..I don’t think he believed me!

Well, anyway, it has been a cheerleading kind of week and that is just where the Lord always brings me back to even in the last mile of MY race. ha! It does my heart so good every single part of all of this. Now, I think I will slowly get up from this chair, grab me some water, and go to bed. Thank you Lord for making me a cheerleader and for also giving me cheerleaders. My mom, sisters, and my running partner, thanks!

Janice C. Johnson - Marlece! You and your family of go-getters continually blow me away. So much passion and energy, so much enthusiasm for life! I love me some Lashers…

Kimbie Shaw - Marlece, you are amazing! I’m so proud of you! I am sooo very thankful God allowed our paths to cross! Congratulations on a job well done….on many levels! 😃

This is my mom. I love her. She has always been devoted to me. I get my cheerleader gene from her for she has always been my biggest cheerleader. I am grateful to her and really in the past couple of years I have found a different kind of love for her, I think out of admiration, that just added to the love already there. She’s my friend thru and thru. I love my mom.

This is my mom too. Jim’s mom. We call her Bona around here from the time Layton decided that was her name. He  spoke of her, one of his first words, to this day it has just stuck. This time of the year is when Bona just lights up. She is an avid gardener, she always amazes me with her talent in this area. She is always giving, and always willing whatever, she is willing. I love her.

ALWAYS in the dirt or in the trees.

Ok, look at this, look at this…..this is what Layton came bearing, this beautiful thing. Wasn’t that sweet? I thought so…..

Layton also brought grand-doggie, Maple.

This is what my kitchen looked like after we ate lunch……yes, that is my men cleaning the kitchen. Sit back Bona  and enjoy with me.

This is what I consider a perfect day, all of the boys right here at home. I am a blessed woman.

Thank you Lord for loving me as you do. To be a daughter to an amazing mother, to be married to a man who has a mother that I now call my own, and then to bless me with four boys, I have no words, I just have no words, but thank you, thank you!

PROM, Junior year

Here we are spring and it’s PROM! So here we go…..

You have to ask with a little creativity so this is what Momma came up with (aren’t I brilliant?)

Jim helped Brayden get the jeep all spiffy for the ride to prom.

Always unique my boy is…..

Always messing around this crew

The big group

Sweet girl, meet Brayden’s date for the evening, Faelyn.

Happy Momma!

Well, they are off to dinner and then some heavy dancing and that will end the day for Prom 2016.

Running, running, and jumping…..

We are in heavy running season in this household. We have had much fun!

I was asked why Corvan and Jordan weren’t in any sports this season besides a little of this and that, my answer has been that I am sick of a coach always telling my kids what to do I’m ready to do the telling. That is with a laugh, but much truth in it, lots of spring cleaning around here and I really need their help. This also instills good work ethic, that is the goal anyway.

I also have been on this huge kick of really not wanting my kids to function on how culture sees things but that they need to work for what they get, it needs to be earned. Entitlement is out of control, not just in our kids but in our society. I want the kids and I to understand that it takes effort on our part for whatever, we don’t expect anything out of nothing. I could give you one hundred and one examples of this, but a few I see that drive me crazy……Mom made dinner so now mom cleans kitchen up. Um no! Or….. I finished school so therefore, mom and dad, send me to college. Um no, where are the scholarships? And, where is your job? Oh this one…….(not so much anymore but its a big one) when your kids are on a team, play a game and then afterwards every time the parents provide ‘snack’. What the heck? I am sure they can survive for another 10 minute ride home to eat a meal. This ‘snack’ thing is what makes our kids think we have to have something going in at all times.

Anyway, I’m really trying to ‘listen’ when I hear a twinge of that entitlement thing come out. It makes us ungrateful and the goal is always to come out of whatever and express our thankfulness rather than, what it ‘could’ have been because of thinking we were entitled.

Ok, enough of my rant…..Jordan and I ran the Seattle Seahawk 12k. Jordan ran the 5k, I ran the 12k. It was so much fun. The family went to cheer us on and it was just fun!

Oh my goodness, this kid, I love him so, he can RUN!!!!!!!! He ran in an age group of 15 and under. Out of 147 kids he got 8th place with a 7:20 pace time per minute. Jim and Corvan were wandering around and missed him coming in because they didn’t think it would be THAT fast. Cracks me up!

Just finished! A 12k is 7 miles, but when I hit that  7 mile marker, I thought the end was NEVER going to come, a few over!

Nice job buddy, nice job!

And then…..we have this going on………SCREAMMMMMMM!

chehalis track meet 2016 1

Creamy Chicken and Rice Soup

Creamy chicken and rice vegetable soup.

3 cups chicken broth

2 medium carrots sliced thinly

1/2 cup sweet onion chopped

1/2 cup chopped celery

1 cup chopped cooked chicken

1/2 cup uncooked rice

1 tsp thyme

1 15 oz container of refrigerated Alfredo sauce

1 cup of frozen corn

Combine turkey broth, carrots, celery, onion and bring to a boil, reduce heat and simmer until vegetables are soft. Stir in chicken, corn and Alfredo sauce and heat thru.

Get yourself a bowl, scoop some soup in it,  with a piece of french bread and let me tell you this soup is smooth and really soothing. Enjoy!
